William Derrah, Board Member, Chicago Maritime Museum, will speak about the whaleship Essex for One Great Read. The heyday of Great Lakes maritime commerce came a couple of generations after the wreck of the whaleing Ship  Essex but  shared traditions and technology.   We will look at what they had in common and what made the two experiences unique.
