Event Details

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, was published anonymously on January 1, 1818.  Few knew that the author was a brilliant and adventurous young woman who had begun writing the book at age 18 and had just turned 20.  Learn about the genesis of this milestone work of the Gothic, romantic and science fiction genres and other intriguing aspects of the author's life and work. Originally conceived for a ghost story contest in the summer of 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel has become one of the most widely read (and misread) novels in the world.  Observe the 200th anniversary with a conversation about the strange alchemy of Romantic values, scientific discoveries, and personal traumas the led to Mary Shelley’s creation, followed by a ghost story activity and contest of our own.  Adam Watkins of the Purdue English Department will present
